Last Friday after our trek across the city (and part way back...), Ebby & I rewarded ourselves with a cupcake from Sweet on Mass. Ave in Boston.
I won't say that going to Sweet was the whole reason we came in to Boston and why I suggested we visit the Gardner museum which I knew would require a lot of walking (thus calorie burning) to get to...
Nope, not gonna say it ;-).
Sweet has been on my list of cupcakeries to visit for quite a while. I was lucky to be able to share my visit with Ebby, my child that actually likes cupcakes. We arrived after lunch at the bistro next door. The shop wasn't crowded and there were plenty goodies to choose from. We settled on a Vanilla Sweetcake (vanilla with vanilla buttercream) for E and a Red Velvet for me.
I may be diving right in, but how about some subjective ratings?
Location: For the average tourist or even office worker in Back Bay, Sweet is a bit out of the way. It felt like a more of a neighborhood location. It was easy to get to however, just a few blocks north of Boylston St. right on Mass. Ave. Now, had I known they just opened another location, right on Newbury Street, we'd have gone to that one. Much more convenient and tourist/day tripper friendly.
Shop Appearance: Sweet was definitely the most polished, pulled together cupcake bakery to date. And personally, I loved the decor. The color palette is a classic pink & brown. Just look at the swirly line drawing cupcake in their logo. A-dorable. The shop was bright, had fun decorative touches (hello, pink suede banquette) and a great custom wallpaper. The whole place had a very Amy Atlas meet Martha Stewart feel. Even the packaging is coordinated with the Sweet logo and thematic ribbon. We actually popped into the Newbury St. location on the way home and found it to be even more appealing. Very cozy, charming, and bright. They had a cupcake made out of flowers and a painted white brick fireplace. Tres chic.
Cupcakes: Our cupcakes were good. Nice frosting, good cake, good ratio of cake to frosting. Mine may have been bordering on overly sweet or I might be particularly sensitive to concentrated amounts of sugar. {Judging by the headache I developed on the way home, I'm going to go with the latter.} I'm rather disappointed in myself that I chose a 'safe' cupcake. They had at least 20 varieties in the case. Why wasn't I more daring? I thought about ordering Pink Lemonade, Lemon Raspberry or Green Tea. But I chickened out. I guess I'll have to make a return visit.
Along with all the varieties of cupcakes, Sweet also sells mini cupcakes in a select varieties, pupcakes for your furry friend, cakes, decorated sugar cookies & frosting shots. Sweet indeed.
Overall: Next time you're in Beantown, head to Newbury Street, get a box of Sweet cupcakes and just be among the beautiful people.
