At the dump in my hometown they have a place to recycle cardboard, dispose of old tires, and donate used clothing. Pretty standard stuff. They also have a Swap Pile. Oh. My. Goodness. It should really be called a treasure pile. It's your basic 'leave it/ take it' area where people put their castaway goods that are too nice to go into the trash, too difficult or beat up to donate to Goodwill or that they think someone will take. Of course there's the flip side, those who dig through the swap pile in hopes of striking paydirt. It's a pretty nice town and there are some decent things to be had. I'm not looking for a fully functioning iPod (reportedly scooped up there a few months ago), just some thrift store quality swag to add to my stash. I mean at free how can it not be a good deal??
So of course I volunteered to go to the dump on Saturday afternoon. I piled trash into my mom's car (she has the dump sticker) and rode away. I must say, Saturday afternoon around 2:30 is prime swap pile time. It's just before closing (3pm) and things have had time to accumulate. Also, the yard sales are mostly over for the day so people come and leave their leftovers. Mmmm, yum.
Ok, ok I think I should share some pictures now.
It was a very good haul, if I do say so myself... Yep, I got all this stuff--for free! My two favorites are the frame (great size, deep and sturdy) and the chalkboard desk. I can totally see that at the Jen Bowles Design booth at a craft fair in the future (it's important to have goals, right?). The Shiny Brite box had 6 or 7 ornaments inside, plain balls in a few different colors. I can't believe no one bought them for $1. Picky, picky.
Lots of good stuff, for sure. I can't wait for next weekend. We're cleaning out my mom's basement so I'm sure I'll be leaving stuff as well as searching for stuff. Have I mentioned that we're moving to a smaller house.... Eh, furniture is overrated : )
