Once again I've been finding myself at my Dad's house trying to help him clean up and out.
Sound familiar? Sure does, because I already spent quite a bit of time helping him clean. In fact I had his cellar totally clean and organized. It was the first project I tackled over there a couple of years ago. Then last summer and the kitchen/first floor renovation project happened. That meant that everything from the kitchen and dining room had to be moved out. Some of the furniture went into the garage and the den. The bulk of the "stuff" though went to....the cellar!
The kitchen/bathroom/dining room project wrapped up in September. Sort of. There are still several punch list type items to be completed, including a few by yours truly. So why the sudden rush now? It's time for another project: replacing the {original??} oil burner!
Oh happy day.
That means that all the boxes and totes and piles of um, stuff, that got put down there last summer need to be sorted and relocated. I'll bet your desk job is looking pretty good right now, eh?
I went over there twice this week (that's pretty much my limit). Did you know that my dad has about 537 glasses?? Wine glasses, beer glasses, crystal, souvenir, plastic. You name it, he's got it. We went through endless boxes boxed up a bunch to go to the Salvation Army. I think he only has about 253 glasses now ;-).
Yesterday I finally got to the boxes containing the food that came out of the cabinets. Mind you, Dennis has some different standards than many when it comes to food. The best by or expiration date on food is merely a guideline for him. Hard to argue, he's a pretty healthy guy. 6 months over? No problem.
But yesterday, I had to draw the line.
We had Jiffy corn muffin mix, best by February 2005.
Spices from when tins of spices were a mere 35 cents. I'm thinking 1970s...
Um, what??
Where did he even get this? Anchovy Oatmeal???
And that's not even the best/worst part.
Yep, it expired in 2002.
My can of evaporated milk from July 2010 is looking pretty fresh about now...
Jen, you crack me up:) AND you are a good daughter!
